Hey Nostradamus, it's a passage to India !
Book review time. 'Hey Nostradamus!' is quite an interesting book (Erick borrowed it from National Library and I borrowed from him). For me, it's about lonely people living, longing, escaping and losing. Cheryl, Jason, Heather and Reg are all very interesting characters, especially Reg. This guy was so lost in his thought and ideas and sense of goodness that he became the exact opposite of what he thought he was. And he lost everything because of that. But maybe it's not too late for him. It's quite short but packs a punch.
In the end, I think the relationship that survive in this world are the ones where the two people can finish each other's sentences. Forget drama and torrid sex and the clash of the opposites.
'A Passage to India' is also quite short, but it took me about three weeks (Fie was quite pissed it took me so long to finish) to finish. Maybe at first it's my reservation towards classic novels. They tend to use 'heavy' words. Going back and forth for my dictionary is not something I want to do when I'm reading. I must admit that it started kinda dry until almost half of the book. Then it got more interesting. Again, for me it's about the relationship between the invaders (Englishmen in this case) and the invadee (is there such a word ? The Indians here). How they see and perceive the other party and how it was impossible for them to be friends. It's kinda a bittersweet drama about a friendship. And I love the way Forster wrote about what some of the characters were thinking. Their thoughts and opinions. This book took me along in its emotional ride making me hate or love the characters. A great classic.
We shall drive every blasted englishman into the sea, and then...and then you and I shall be friends.
