Friday nights and the lights are low...
I haven't really mastered the art of watching a dance performance. Especially the modern type. If there's only one or two dancers on the stage, I can handle that. But sometimes, four, five or maybe ten (or even more) people can be on the stage at the same time and I find it very hard to see all of them at the same time. One will be at one corner twirling around while the other will be at the other corner doing some fancy moves that God knows what. I remember seeing my first dance performance at Kallang theatre. It was a modern jazz dance, if I'm not mistaken. My eyes kept moving from one end of the stage to the other to catch the movements of the entire dance crew and I ended up missing some parts of the dance. It's almost impossible for me to keep track of every movement on the stage and I don't think they (the dancers or maybe the choreographers) really want the audience to do that.
So maybe that's the way to enjoy a dance performance. Just concentrate on the main characters and see everything else as a blur. A background movement, if you will. Something that is not meant to be seen directly but only from the corner of your eyes. Maybe then, I'll be able to fully appreciate the entire dance performance. See, everything would be much simpler if dance stops at ballroom dance.
