Save the Children

I was watching 'Oprah' on TV today (It was in the afternoon and I have nothing else to watch, okay) and she was telling this story.

About twenty years ago, a reporter from England saw a dying child in Ethiopia. She was three years old and the nurse who was treating her said she will die in fifteen minutes. All because of starvation. The reporter couldn't bear to film the child dying so he said he would come back in five hours to film the funeral. When he came back five hours later, the child was still very much alive. The nurse gave her a shot just moments before she was going to die and it seemed that she'd survive after all. That very report was then broadcasted and was seen by a rocker, Bob Geldolf. He was so moved by the report that he started what now known as Band Aid - Live Aid that donated millions to victims of starvation in Africa.
So what happened to that three year old child ?
Her name is Birhan and she's now still very much alive.

Moving to China, hundreds of thousands of baby girls are abandoned there. Thanks to the one-child policy, baby boy is valued much higher than baby girl. Imagine this, boys are seventeen millions more than girls. Can you imagine how many baby girls are abandoned or aborted ? State orphanages are choked full with baby girls. You know what they do to those babies ? They tie them into chairs with potties underneath the chairs. All they can do all day is just rock their bodies. Here's the worse part. There's this thing called 'The Dying Rooms' in these orpahanges. It's where baby girls are left to die. A documentary team from US found one of these rooms and found one girl who had been left to die for one week. That girl died five hours after she was found by that team. Because of that report, UN gave China one year to improve the situation. China since then has tried to eliminate this problem although many are still aborted or abandoned every day.

The point is there are so many people in this world that live in such suffering that death seems to be a better option for them. Even today people are suffering and dying in parts of the world because no one is there to help them. I'm sure that you've heard many many times that there lots of people that suffered more than you. And perhaps the one reason that we always give is that they're so far away, there's nothing I can do anyway. I know, I gave that very same reason many many times. But is that true ? The world today is so connected that I'm sure that there is a way for you guys to help those in Africa, Asia, or Aceh or even your own city.There are still people out there that don't even have the basic human rights and here we are living as if we don't know that they're around us.

From starving kids in Africa to abandoned baby girls in China to homeless kids in parts of United States or those street kids that we meet almost everyday. Please, if you have the means to help, I'm sure they won't say no if you help them, in any way. It's just humane to help fellow human beings. Even thoughif the rules of ethics and morals are very unclear these days, I'm sure saving lives still very much the right thing to do.
So once more, if you can help in a big or small way, it doesn't have to be money as long as it means something, please do.
If there's a will, there's a way, ya ? It'll mean so much to those people.
